Foreword

Dear all,

Come August 2007, it will be that time of the year when people start talking about sappy TV commercials that make us cry, raising Jalur Gemilang and just about anything relating to this 7-letter word: M.E.R.D.E.K.A! Let's worry not, as my committee and I have worked hard on a vision to bring the exact atmosphere back home here in Sydney just so we all can celebrate the Merdeka spirit the way it should. To everyone out there (Malaysians or non-Malaysians alike), let's join the hype and don't forget that by doing so, you are indeed lending a helping hand to those in need as proceeds from this event will be channeled to MERCY Malaysia.

Now that all is fine and dandy, just know that an event like this will never be complete without your support. Come on come all as we promise you a night to remember.

Malaysiaku Gemilang.

About MGM 2007

Malam Gema Merdeka (MGM 2007) is an annual event that serves to reflect on the journey of Malaysia as an independent nation and all the trials and tribulations in its fight for independence. The year 2007 marks a significant milestone in celebrating 50 years of nationhood, hence the Golden Jubilee celebration.

Organised by the Malaysian Students' Council of Australia (MASCA) New South Wales and Kelab UMNO New South Wales (KUNSW), the main event for the night would be the musical drama performed by the students themselves. With the target audience ranging from Malaysians as well as Australians, MGM seeks to create an atmosphere of patriotism and celebration of Malaysia as a culturally rich, modern, and nature-loving nation.

Ticket revenue will be contributed to MERCY Malaysia in line with their belief of "Healing Across Borders". This collaboration is expected to be an annual affair benefiting both parties greatly.

Sypnosis

This is a story about Puteri, a girl blessed with all the simple gifts of life. A loving family, supportive friends and a future full of promises. An unexpected visit would soon be a catalyst to a journey to the unfamiliar; leaving her at crossroads. Does she stay for the ones she loves, or embark on a journey to with a promising future. After much contemplation, assisted by persuasions, Puteri finally makes the decision to leave home, and so begins her journey.

Exposed to the different lifestyle of Malaysian overseas, the sense of pride for her origins and her country began to fade, and was soon buried inside her. Nonetheless, an incident one day made her awakened a heart long left asleep, making her realize that no matter where she goes, no matter where her journey leads her, her love for her country can never be erased. It stays, deeply embedded inside her.

Albeit the main storyline, the story will also explore the contrasting personalities of Budin, a laidback, apathetic and underachieving teenager and his grandfather, a fighter of independence with a superior sense of patriotism. This part of the story will expose the clash between two worlds - one who understands the blessings of an independent Malaysia, and the other who forgets that things do not come for free. Their contrast of opinions will show us how different life is in the present and back in the day-that may even change our views of life.

A fusion of acting, singing and dancing, this sketch will highlight the multicultural Malaysian society, and a glimpse of how Malaysian students live in a country, not their own. With a variety of songs and dances representing the unique cultures in Malaysia, colourful costumes with distinct styles and a hint of Malaysian fashion, and a talented cast who are passionate about their work, we will bring you through a journey filled with drama and emotions. A story of a journey not only of a girl, but of something deeper and more meaningful.

Character Story

Puteri

As the only child of Fatimah and Abu, her parents have very high hopes on her. Blessed with a bright mind, Puteri has a wonderful future ahead of her. Yet, at a very young age, she is faced with the dilemma of having to make a life changing decision.

Mak/Fatimah

Mak Timah is a housewife who works part-time selling kueh to support her family’s living after her husband’s accident. She is a strong woman who wants the best for her family, and pushes them to do their best.

Ayah/Pak Abu

Stuck in a wheelchair after a very unfortunate incident, Pak Abu is a loving father who is the ‘soft’ one in the family. Whenever there is an argument about to heat up, he is the one who lightens the air with his lighthearted comments. Puteri turns to her dad whenever there is something which is bothering her.

Dato’ Bernard

A generous and caring employer, Dato’ Bernard still visits his former employee Pak Abu even after their working relationship has ended.

Datin Vivian

Datin Vivian is Dato’ Bernard’s wife and she is just as caring and generous as her husband.

Budin/Slacker

Budin is an orphan living with his grandfather. Faced with the death of his parents less then a year before he moved to the village, Budin chose to live a life of no worries by spending his time playing the guitar.

Grandfather/Brahim

Brahim is Budin’s grandfather who wants to see Budin change for the better and live an ambitious life. Being an ex-soldier, Brahim is disappointed by the lack of patriotism and appreciation shown by the present generation.

Nadia and Eddy

Although they were sponsored by the government to further their studies in Australia, and to go back to Malaysia to provide their services, they have decided that they’d much rather stay in Australia. They seem to have the impression that living overseas has so much more benefits than returning to their home country.
